I am directed by Secretary Sir Edward Gray to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 20th instant regarding the appointment of a Chinese consulting engineer for the Chinese section of the Canton-Kowloon Railway.
In reply, I am to inform you that His Majesty's Minister at Peking has, at the desire of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, been requested by telegraph to furnish a report on the subject, and has been authorized, should he think it advisable, to make immediate and energetic representations to the Chinese Government, with a view to the cancellation of the Chinese engineer's appointment, and the substitution of Sir J. Wolff Barry.
At the same time, I am to observe that it is by no means obvious to Sir E. Gray why the Corporation should build...
