knowledge the receipt of your letter of the 20th in-

stant ragarding the appointment of a Chinese consulting

engineer for the Chinese section of the Canton-Kowloon

Failway.

In reply 1 am to inform you that His Majesty's

inister at Paking has, at the desire of the Secretary

of State for the Colonies, baon requested ly talograph

to furnish s report on the subject, and has been kuth-

erized, should he think it advisable, to anke immediate

and arergatio reprosertations to the Chinese Governmant,

with a view to the cancellation of the Chinose enginer's

appointment, and the substitution of Sir J. Wolfa Harry.
